The Who, What and Why of Compression

What are compression socks and how do they work?

Compression socks are woven to apply pressure to your calves and ankles. In graduated compression socks the level of compression is strongest at the ankle and gradually decreases towards the top of the sock. Typically the pressure is 100% at the ankle, 70% at the calf and 40% at the cuff.

The pressure from the sock may reduce the diameter of major veins by increasing the volume and velocity of blood flow, help blood flow up toward the heart, and help prevent blood from refluxing downward to the foot or laterally into superficial veins.

Can compression socks help me?

Compression socks may be worn to help manage:
Swelling of the ankles and/or legs, achy or heavy legs, poor circulation, varicose veins and recovery after exercise.

Compression socks are also helpful in the prevention of blood clots/deep vein thrombosis during periods of inactivity eg. when travelling, recovering from injury/surgery, or even when sitting at a desk or standing to work for an extended time.

Are compression socks difficult to put on?
Answer: Not if you know how to do it properly!
Put the socks on first thing in the morning, as soon as you get up, before any swelling starts.
Ensure your legs and hands are dry.
Avoid grasping the fabric with sharp fingernails. Remove any jewellery which may snag the socks before starting.
Turn the sock inside out to the heel, fit the sock over your foot to the heel, and roll the rest of the sock up the leg and smooth out the material. Some people find it easier if they wear rubber gloves.
Avoid over-stretching the socks and do not pull up them up only by the top band.

How do compression stockings help during pregnancy?
Many women experience swollen, heavy legs during their pregnancies. One in two pregnant women will develop varicose veins as a result of the swelling. The moment a woman conceives, her body begins to change. Blood volume increases by approximately 20% and progesterone increases the elasticity of the vein walls. As a result blood has a tendency to pool and cause swelling. Compression socks provide a gentle pressure to help blood flow back to the heart, helping prevent swelling and the development of varicose veins.
